retirement...

Posted by bert at 03:03 PM on February 1, 2005 in ME.

man.. i just want to be retired right now.. but how would i support myself?

yeah.. no clue.. but i can't imagine another 30+ years of this... =(

Today was "tie day." a bunch of people got together and were talking about how its such a lax attitude at work in terms of dress.. and someone actually started moaning and groaning about how he has all these shirts and ties that he doesn't wear anymore... and someone had the bright idea to show solidarity and wear ties on tuesdays...

which we did today. Imagine managements eyes today when they saw 8 people dressed up in nice slacks, a dress shirt, and a tie. But somehow i think teh girls in business liked it more =)

weekend wrapup

Posted by bert at 07:22 AM on February 7, 2005 in ME.

Well... i haven't had a stretch of so little sleep in a very long time. Basically by the time i woke up Sunday morning, I had a grand total of 11.5 hours of sleep over the last 4 nights.

part of it was my bad (wed night staying up playing World of Warcraft), and the rest... either i hung out with friends, or was working (yes.. actual work.)
then there was Beth's wedding, the superbowl, visiting my Dad, and Katamari Domacy.

I finally found a store that carried the game. Like everything else, NC lags behind the rest of the country in electronics too. Katamari Domacy was actually available at the local EB and I picked up a copy. To say the least it's a *tad* =P addicting... but apparantly it gives some people motion sickness. sad... =( but yes... some of my precious sleep time was consumed by this.

Got to hang out with Joe again, and that was quite cool.. Hopefully his first date with the new girl worked out well... Did you end up taking her to the chocolate festival? Unique first dates = WIN!!!

And as always when I go to Maryland I stayed with one of my favorite people's (Lauren). Lauren had asked me to bring her bags of Salsa Verde Doritos since Maryland doesn't carry that flavor. So I had my two carryons and a bag with 3 bags of Salsa Verde Doritos. When I got on the plane, the stewardress was like... "sir, we need to check in one of your bags. You are allowed only 1 carryon and 1 personal item." i was dumbfounded, asked them about how packed they were today when a guy with only 1 carryon said.. then i'm holding his doritos for him.

Besides that jetBlue i must say is probably my favorite airline right now despite the fact they use the rickety Airbuses. If they flew old 767's and 737's they'd be MONEY. Having directTV on the flight is nice too. I was able to watch the entire Superbowl on my flight. Very nice!!! and i really like their Terra Farma (blue) potato chips. not really sure why.

The wedding was cool, but the music was a tad cheesy. Ken and Beth decided to ask teh DJ to play the Electric Slide.. oh... 4 times! and then they wouldn't play like. i dunno.. love songs.. and right when we were about to leave i think they finally played something dancable. But i guess that's cool cuz Beth was showing like crazy. I couldn't believe the change in her since last month. (it was weird.. but i think my dog gained the same amount of weight...) But.. exciting.. the baby is coming around August 8th... and i just think it'd be pretty cool if it came say.. oh.. 4 days early =)

Much thanks to Lauren, Charlie, and Joyce who accompanied me down to NC this weekend. I hope y'all had a good time down here. I know Lauren always does with Sweet Tomatoes =). You guys are great, and thanks for putting up with my weird ass schedule. And now after wasting about 20 minutes at work to post this.. I have a 10 hour day ahead of me. =)

btw.. did anyone see the M-robe during the superbowl. Man... if the music quality on that thing is anygood at all... i think this will be the first "I want it now" product I have seen in the last oh... 10 years or so. Lets hope the price is under $400, but i think $500 is more likely.

Posted by bert at 01:56 PM on February 7, 2005 in ME.

I've always been pretty open with my beliefs and what I like (games involving a ball) and don't like (games involving a girl).

One thing is undeniable.. Anyone who has ever known me knows this.. i LOVE to eat. I can go ANYWHERE and I will know where to eat within the first two weeks. i.e. I go and visit lauren and tell her where to eat =)

And then when you come to my turf... well.. prepare for food, unless your picky.. and then it's your problem.

Now, I've moved away from the dirty south for over a year and half now. (scary huh?) and I've told anyone who has ever asked... "what do you miss the most" the same thing.

well. kinda.

DAMNIT... i miss BOJANGLES!. why? not necessarily the fried chicken.. and not necessarily the sides.. but really the sweet tea in combination of always grabbing a good meal.

people think i'm bonkers.. and have no appreciation for it.. and that i'm delusional... well... blah.. I feel vindicated because..

http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=simmons/superblog/4

yeah.. just read it.. sweet tea... yes.. it's SUGAR + WATER... but really.. it's so much more. so... damnit.. just go appreciate it.. Nothing could be simpler.. but man... it's the best stuff on earth. Southern Style Sweet Tea.

pretty much the only thing i miss from NC with the exception of actual people.

One way the company is recognizing employees for a job well done is through the EIP award—14 days of extra pay, which is pretty darn good. bad beats...

Posted by bert at 08:23 AM on February 14, 2005 in Poker.

I'd like to think I've been playing relatively well over the course of the past few weeks or so. My poker game is pretty much on, and in my mind... I am making all the right reads, and I haven't gone into a pot when I was behind unless it has been on purpose, with the exception of once.

going into pots ahead all the time, also means I have to have continued luck in order to succeed. Sometimes you just can't avoid the dumb players that just get lucky.

Last night i entered a tourney on Pokerstars, about 900 people or so, and after 3.5 hours of grinding, I was in solid position... (about 15th out of 35). I get dealt the deathtrap. Pocket Aces..

blinds at 1000/2000, and the guy three ahead of me raises to 8000 (he has roughly 30k chips). now.. i get this creepy feeling in the back of my throat, but seriously.. how can you lay down rockets preflop? i re-raised him to 24k. and after a long deliberate thought, i re-raised all in. I quickly call.

he has AQ, off suit and I have AA.
flop. 3 hearts, turn another heart, and guess who has the only heart out of the bunch? yeah.. that's right.. he has the queen of hearts.
my tourney life ends to a 4 card flush draw that beats out pocket aces. And i could have easily lasted until the final 20... where my payout would have been $350, instead of $75... had he not caught the flush.. that would have put me in 3rd.. and final table starts at $650, with the winner taking $5400. *sigh*

Shirt and Tie day again.

Posted by bert at 05:28 PM on February 15, 2005 in ME.

It's Tuesday, which again means.. Tie day for us Systems Engineers on the FAB-T Program.

Basically what it is, is that we dress up (shirt, tie, slacks, belt, dress shoes, dress socks, COMBED HAIR [for leo...]) every Tuesday.

well.. this is the first Tuesday that we did it and ate lunch outside of our immediate area. There were basically a few things we noticed.

1.) People kept asking us "why we were dressed up."
2.) Girls kept looking at us and smiling (huh? yeah.. weird huh?)
3.) Management kept giving us worried looks about leaving early so we could go interview.
Yes... they joked with us and asked us who we were interviewing with this afternoon.

anyway... #2 is prolly most important because Brian can meet a new wife!. go him.. next tuesday he's promised to go full on with the jacket combo as well. =)

I hate flying

Posted by bert at 07:33 PM on February 16, 2005 in ME.

Even when everything goes well, and there are no disasters, flying just flat out blows. it sucks the life out of you. Your disoriented and miscombobulated. Hell i don't even know if spelled that right or not...

on the bright side.. flying gives you the oppurtunity to really talk to some interesting folks..

Like.. Dan the guy who owns the Cary Towne Center Chick-Fil-a. He was telling me about the interview process to own a store involved a 4 year interview process and a 6 week manager training session he called "chicken school." Pretty interesting, but guess where i'm getting my lunch tomorrow gratis? =) yeah.. you heard me right Linda.. I now have an IN at chic-fil-a

or.. how about Gary the JDSU engineer from Melbourne, Florida? yeah... he used to work at the OTHER company down there.. *cough* Harris. I told him about the one anal retentive Harris recruiter who would tell everyone that they were getting plenty of 4.o students from Stanford and MIT applying, and that NCSU sucked... so I took back my resume and gave it to Boeing instead =). He's like... "Oh i know who you are talking about.. He's supposed to do that, it's all an act so you get the people really desperate for jobs still forcing resumes on you." which led to a conversation about why that was the dumbest recruitment gimnick I have ever heard, and I ended it with.. "no self-respecting engineer NOT from Stanford or MIT would put up with that bullshit. who the hell does harris think they are? Google? No... I could care less if harris FINALLY broke 2 billion in sales last year. Boeing did 45+ btw."

lastly sheila (not really sure how to spell her name).. did you know that hand modeling actually makes good money? Yes... can you believe that Seinfeld episode with George is actually remotely true? Yes they those crazy ass white gloves. and. Vasoline intensive care got an A+ in the "hand moisturizing non-over-the-counter category." Hell did you know that there are actually over the counter MOISTURIZERS? and then other moisturizers are better for non-digit localities on your hands?

my gameshow quotient has gone up a good 10 points today.

any... meeting these people are fun... and i'm back in Raleigh with another 4 hours of work... so i do as normal.. Blog =)

Telecommuting is GREAT!

Posted by bert at 11:52 AM on February 17, 2005 in ME.

i'm going to list the reasons why.

  • i can do work while in bed.

  • i can pet the dog and think about the issues at hand simultaneously

  • a better chanc that nobody has pee'd on the toilet seat this morning

  • hell, if i really wanted to, i could do work while ON the can.

  • starbucks can be home too.

  • it's 1:30 and i haven't showered yet...
or shaved =) but i'm asian so.. i don't shave anyway

  • music is blasting too! i'm listening to and enjoying some of my old HS cd's.. like.. WEEZER and Wallflowers. yes... reverse alphabetically =P

  • i'm in my boxers and a raggedy t-shirt =)

  • i can still IM on the company intranet to get anything that i really need. "hey... whats the dial in number for that telecon that i was suppsed to attend?"

  • i lose the feeling of claustrophobia brought on by the short dimensions of my cubicle.

    but...
    i do miss one thing...

i don't have 3 whiteboards to do work on at home. All i have here are legal pads =P

    Eating the Elephant Slowly.

Posted by bert at 10:49 PM on February 17, 2005 in ME, Poker.

    and i was the elephant.

since i'm telecommuting, a side benefit is that I finally got to play in roy's live thursday night poker game. I wanted the training since playing with strangers can help you more than anything when prepping for tournaments... yes.. that means i'm gearing up for some of hte smaller world series' come this summer.

I decided to go in with the strategy that I've accepted is the way to go early. Limp often and agressively.

It also helped that I got a few good hands. A couple of AK's and a QQ in the big blind. But mostly, i was aggressively pot pushing like I told roy I would.

Before blinds had his 300/600 (we started at 100/200) i had won probably 12 hands, only 5 of which were legit.

more or less trying to get a feel for the room and see styles of play.

and then I hit my QQ in the big blind. I checked it 5-handed, and recieved a great flop of 6 3 2. checked and had 2 people after me bet. i went over teh top of both terrence and yush and took them all in. one had 67, the other had 6 10. Granted they were shortstacked, so it's more understandable. After winning the hand, I think i was sitting pretty at around 35k of the 70k total in chips.

    blinds at 400/800 now...
and i feel the wrath of the man they call moonie the gentleman.

i decide..i have a stack.. lets continue the agressive play. well.. I had AA as well.. and doubled the blinds to show my pot stealing abilities. 2 callers. flop is 10 4 10, and i immediately lead out with a 1k bet. and get raised 2k more. now... alarms are going off in my head... and the two gents knocked out already are talking about hurrying up so we could get a second game in. moonie's got 2500 or so more.. so i put him all in, DESPITE seeing that there is every chance in the world he's got me beat. All i'm thinking is... I'm Gus Hansen and I knock everyone out.

so... the 44 gets shown and i get my first setback of the night.

this is followed by an equally poor decision on Roy's all in. I doubled him up after calling with AJ. yup.. Ace high won that one.

despite this.. i was still sitting relatively well with 15k or so in chips. and then i caught the absolute worst thing you can have mid-tournament. a more than normal run of mid pocket pairs.

I had 77, 99x2, TT, JJ x2. and each and every time, donald who was ahead of me, would make a raise of 3-4x the blinds. Which i would call and then have a flop that hits with two over cards and another strong bet.

Finally i tried to make my stand with one of the biggest backstabbing hands of all time. (right behind pocket jacks), i would say AQ is one of the biggest sucker bets in poker.

the 500/1k blinds with a 2k raise from donald. I'm sitting with roughly 5.5k left at this point so i pushed. donald quickly flipped over kings and this elephant was eaten none too slow.. because i was teh third person out.

In retrospect.. i made a lot of mistakes... and if i'm playing this poorly come the world series... i'll just be throwing away my 1 grand entrance fee.

    A night to support women...

Posted by bert at 09:45 PM on February 18, 2005 in ME.

well... ok... there's that part in every guy that watches the occassional chick flick, and even sometimes remotely sympathizes with women. Tonight was one of those nights where I decided to help out the girls.

I went and support Christinas Lambda Phi Chi sorority at Duke University's Sexual Assualt Awareness event. Basically a bunch of groups putting on performances in the name of sexual assualt awareness. All proceeds were donated to some fund that covers that. I lost my flyer so i don't remember exactly.

anyway.. Gotta watch 3 acapella groups (1 all male, 1 all female, and 1 co-ed) that were all pretty good. It just amazes me though that nowadays you can't be a lead vocal of any of these unless your some sort of tenor. Hehe... where's the barry whites out there huh?

And then the highlight of the night was the 3 step teams (one of which was Christinas). the brothas at Psi Beta Epsilon were remarkable and showed their national championship form (yeah.. no kiddin). Lots of energy, emotion, and passion in their stepping. And i guess lots of rhythm too. Followed by the Alphas at APA. they even gave a message about how the problem is 'us brothas' and the solution is still 'us brothas.' yes... he got a standing ovation.

but man... where were the canes? the best part of the step show is when you start stepping with canes and top hats!... mikey.. gotta bust them out for your next show.

For you NC kids... LNY is next week so go support your Bubble Tea habit. and listen to some poorly formed spoken word essays with topics such as... "I AM ASIAN-AMERICAN." or... "TWINKIE DEFINES ME!" or... "SWEEP THE LEG!"

and then the afterparty of course =) Gotta love the ASA afterparties... and speaking of afterpartys... i guess i should go make my appearance instead of typing on tabulas huh? =)

    The Sports Guy intern competition

Posted by bert at 09:01 AM on February 22, 2005 in ME.

so... he's doing an internship competition. I kinda thought it'd be fun to apply, but decided to be purposely late in submitting.

so here's the app sent in last night

    Subject: First, Break the rules....

    Name: Bert Tong
College: North Carolina State University, 2002
    Age: 25.5
    Residence: Tustin, CA
    Current Job: Engineering (Boeing)

I don't have time for your internship. Frankly it could go to someone better qualified, better educated, funnier, hotter. But I was horrified by your final cut, so delinquent as it is. Here you go. Nothing great in life ever happens unless you challenge the rules. I have now broken three of yours, but for good reason.

Its rather abhorring and repugnant that boston/new york/east coast bias continues to play a role. Yes... The west coast has a severe identity crisis when it comes to sports competitions. (they are not beyond bragging about USC's title even though they bleed blue and gold - or so they say...) People out west are just happy when the Pac-10 is well represented. But your intern should be from the Midwest? The yin to your beantown yang.

I am myself an walking identity crisis. Born in Jersey, raised in the right field bleachers behind Andre Dawson and Ryno, Educated in tobacco road. I've enjoyed nothing but the best of the best. The Jordan Dynasty, Bears Superbowl (for Christ’s sake I lived 2 doors down from the Fridge from 84 - 89. The moved to within 1 block of SWEETNESS! No kidding.. Jarrett Peyton would have gone to my high school had they not gone the private route.) Defensive football is God. Let everyone else have their Peyton Mannings, but give me classic Singletary/Butkus anyday. I think the greatest travesty in Chicago sports is named Jerry. I think the '94 strike was the single most devastating blow to the Sox (the white ones). But part of me is ok with this, because Reinsdorf doesn't deserve any respect.

I believe the 2nd greatest thing to happen to the Cubbies (behind them winning it all), was to see the BoSox win it. Curses can be broken, and now we know it can be done. Now can we get a Billy Beane protege and be on our way? I still believe.
what's that? i can't root for both the Sox and the Cubs? well.. I wish the WhiteSox well in every game of the season except against the cubbies. I want them to sweep through the ALCS and i want Kerry Wood and Mark Prior to deliver back to back perfect games to demoralize the Reinsdorfs some more. Screw Subway Series. I want a true windy city classic. This is the philosophy of the Duke/Carolina rivalry. Duke wishes Carolina wins all but 4 games every season. The home and away, the ACC championship, and the NCAA championship. They want them at their best, and they want to be the executioners. I want the Cubbies to be like Duke. I want Coach K celebrating with them. After all.. he IS from Chicago. Maybe I am on to something? Bye bye Dusty?

So where am I going with this? where is the representation Bill? Well.. as we say in Chicago. Maybe Next year. But for the mean time.. We do have Mia Hamm. Now if we could just get rid of Bob Verdi… and.. GO PACK!

    Travel Notes

Posted by bert at 06:18 PM on February 23, 2005 in ME.

Flying is always a new experience…

Today I had a new experience occur to me. I got to the airport at 5:20 a.m. for my 6:20 flight out of RDU. By the time I made it through security. It was 6:15. They seriously spent a good 5 minutes checking everyone’s bags. Slow scanning every single freaking item. I get on my plane… and I can’t readily fine overhead luggage area.. so the flight attendant starts moving people’s coats… only to get yelled at by someone else flying. Oh I knew today was going to be a good day.

I get to my seat and I realize there’s this old dude sitting there.. “passed out.” Damnit… I purposely get window seats so I can lean on the wall with my pillow and pass out. If I want leg room I get an aisle seat, but no where never do I get a middle seat unless it’s Thanksgiving and flying home on the 11th hour, etc.

This geriatric bastard was fast asleep in my seat and what am I supposed to do in this situation? Wake him up? No.. I let him be, and take the open seat. As soon as we start moving… the bastard wakes up and starts talking to me about his 25 acres of cranberries. All the mean time, I’m sleeping or tying to sleep. But he was poking me with his grubby fingers after pretending to be asleep to hijack my window seat…

I spent the next 2 hours in the air with this guy trying to talk, and me trying to explain that I was tired. I vaguely recall something about his kids, and his cranberries, and his worth in ocean spray stock, and whatever… it’s not like I give a shit.

After landing I kinda look around and I see this guy ahead of me hugging the flight attendant. I thought it was kinda weird, until I realized that she was about mid-20’s and the guy was in a nice business suit. And she had no ring. Think about this. If you’re a single woman… what more perfect job is there to meet guys at? Good quality, well-to-do, I HAVE A JOB – type of guys. It’s perfect. And she’s kinda cute.. so… I guess it won’t be long.

Btw… Why doesn’t every airport have free wireless? Makes us laptop users much more compliant with all this waiting.. layovers… etc.. I guess not all of us can be lucky enough to have direct flights… oh well.. I’m officially over 50k miles now on my continental account. LOL.. that’s right.. I’m a double silver status one-pass member. From the last 2 years alone.

    Random side notes:

I just spent the last 5 minutes staring at this one guy’s starbucks cup. And I couldn’t help but think.. MAN… I REALLY want a cup of joe, but then I hear that my plane is boarding. I’m torn… man… I am. I shall forgo the coffee.

It's the Beginning of a new season

Posted by bert at 09:29 AM on February 24, 2005 in ME.

Yup.. Basketball (and softball) season has officially started. Not to mention that Cali is at the tail end of their rainy season.
So to honor it all.. I decided to not only go to the gym, but to check out my ballin' skills.

hehe.. oh dear.. don't laugh too hard.

I proceeded to miss my first 10 shots. (but this is more or less because I fubared my knee around x-mas). I can't jump too much off my right leg. And... i got schooled by this fat latino guy because i couldn't make two consecutive cuts to keep infront of it. (I have good lateral movement to my right.. and can't move left..)

This will be in interesting season seeing that I need what little athleticism i have to play my game. I play a 2-guard position. And i can't jump and help rebound.. I guess i could pick up the PF spot and try to gain another 20 lbs to grab boards... but... sheesh.. i'm 5'10 so i think i'm at a slight disadvantage there.

Well... we'll see how it goes tonight. ANd maybe this "rehabbing" will be good for my knee =)

btw... the best part of california is the days after it rains when there is near perfect visibility. Too bad today the smog has resettled over the mountains and the fresh powder. It's really disheartening to see that big mass of brown roll over everything that is beautiful. *sigh*

the knee held up which was good. the ankle brace.. well.. lets say i played it too safe... next week i might be able to actually cut when i want. hehe.. i even got rim today!

Felt great today... and now I can't wait till next thursday. Now I guess this gives me incentive to start running at the gym on saturdays. and tuesdays =). maybe the wed park game.

    I have broken down...

Posted by bert at 08:02 AM on February 28, 2005 in ME.

and joined the evil club that is... Steve Job's fanatical cult-like idolists... I bought myself an IPOD...

it's light blue in color because... well it's an old style mini (8 hours of battery life + 5 GB hard drive). but i got it dirt cheap and free shipping. You gotta take advantage of places that give you $75 towards the purchase of something over $150 when you sign up for their company card. I signed up.. and paid a whopping total of $110 for my mini! Gonna pay off the balance and cut the card.

but.. $110 Steve Jobs.. that's my breaking price. Guess i'm not that early an adopter.

Do girls really want to wait 3 days

Posted by bert at 08:06 AM on February 28, 2005 in musings.

you know.. the rules with dating.. etc.. if i get someone's number.. i'm "supposed" to call 3 days afterwards since it's teh perfect "i'm not too desperate, yet still interested" time period.

But really... if a girl gives you her number.. does she expect to wait 3 days?

    inquiring minds want to know.

Cuz I got a number last night... And i think I wait till tonight to call her. =) hehe.. maybe they're right about that desperation thing. =P

    More $$ for Music

Posted by bert at 12:59 PM on February 28, 2005 in musings.

    This disgusts me...

basically if you don't want to read it... music execs want to raise the price it charges legit online music download sites. The record labels charge a wholesale price per song to each of the legit d/l sites like napster and itunes.. which in turn sell them to the public for roughly a buck a song.

ARE YOU FREAKING DUMB!?!? you greedy SOBs... you want people to stop pirating music so you started to sue some of them. and while it's been a lot more effective than I thought it would be (some peopel are REALLY dumb about how the D/L music...), now you are going to turn around and try to increase more profits by charging these sites more overhead... meaning in turn they have to roll the charges to us. Are you that F'ing greedy?

apparently... but people will revolt.. they don't like being taken advantage of... and it really isn't that hard to get music around the system.

How do you know if my MP3 copy of Boulevard of Broken Dreams is legit or not? (i do own the CD, only it's in MD right now).

They don't and don't care, but you know what? They're going to lose people because of it... greedy jerks.
